Yesterday I planted three different strawberry varieties: Earlyglow, Allstar and Sparkle. These come to maturity at different times of the summer so this collection is supposed to provide fruit throughout much of the summer. I planted them in the western bed that is in a semi-circle shape. As you can see I used lots of straw mulch but I’m still concerned about weeds. For comparison I show an of the alpine strawberries I planted last spring. The fruit from the alpine types is smaller but is very tasty and they keep producing all summer at a modest level. Also the alpine strawberries don’t spread by runners.
